Eiffel Tower in the mist part II!

Let's start the week from anoter riverside point of view. I took it Saturday evening on a way back from a dinner party in the 15th, from the Pont Mirabeau bridge (this time I remember the bridge I was on!). There is not much to add, is there?

Paris Coat of Arms

After all this time (6 years!) I realized I never really showed you the Paris coat of arms. So here it is... photographed yesterday on the aerial metro at Cambronne. Like you can see, it shows a vessel, which was, when it was created (around 1190 apparently) one of the major means of trade . The city motto, Fluctuat nec mergitur ("it is tossed by the waves, but does not sink") means that despite the hard time Paris can experience from time to time, it is still standing! Have a nice Labor Day weekend if you are in the States...

Helicopter ride over Paris

Lucky me I went on a helicopter ride above Paris yesterday (Sunday)... Well when I say above, it's more accurate to say, around, because flying over Paris is totally forbidden. It was nice, but not extraordinary, because for legal reasons (helicopters are noisy!) they have to take you away to the west suburbs as quickly as possible and you don't get to see much. I would not really recommend it, unless you have never been on a helicopter before. In which case, it's still a nice experience. More photos to come (together with the white dinner party ones, which I still did not have the time to file...).

Spelling Bee

Only in France? Yes probably... During the past months about 5000 7th grade pupils throughout France took part in a huge spelling bee competition. The final was broadcast yesterday evening on national television ! I'm sure it was a huge success as, for the French, getting the right spelling is like a national sport! Before, adults would even take part in it... Why? Because we suffer so much with our grammar rules and weird spelling that once we sort of master them, it becomes like a game...

Edges

April 1st, no this is not an April fool's day photo, it's a theme day one... And the theme today is "Edges"! I really wasn't prepared to live on the edge today, but these figures apparently are ;-) So here you go, I took this photo at the Bir Hakeim bridge, a beautiful double decker bridge (the upper deck being used by the metro) with four statue groups by Gustave Michel on the edge. See how the rest of the City Daily Photo world was inspired by today's theme...

PDP belated anniversary

Shame on me! I forgot to wish PDP a happy 6th anniversary, can you believe it?! I don't know why I had March 19 in mind, so I was not too worried about finding the perfect photo.And if it weren't for some of my very observant visitors (hey Monica!) I would have totally forgotten it. That's what happens after 6 years of daily posting, it's become like brushing my teeth or getting dressed in the morning, a habit! A nice habit though ;-) Big kiss to everyone from Paris and let me offer you this sunset view of the Metro taken from the rue Saint Saëns in the 15th arrondissement.

Animal Farm

Like every year around the 20th of February the Salon International de l'Agriculture (the International Agricultural Show) returns. And like every year it's going to be as succesful as the year before. Parents love to take their kids to this show - especially the ones in Paris - to show them what food looks like before it hits the freezer LOL. And it's not only about cows and pigs of course, but also about cheese, plants, tractors... everything you can find in a farm. The French, who almost all come from a farmer background (in 1900 almost one half of the French population would still work in a farm environment) love their peasants.

What it takes to find a job nowadays... The man in this ad is not just another model, but a real unemployed Marketing Manager looking for a job. To find one, he had the idea of renting a couple of billboards AND an exhibition hall (where job fairs are usually held) to greet potential employers... (check this video). Of course he did not pay for all this but got the help of sponsors looking for visibility. And it worked of course: this guy has been all over the news, and more than that, he made it to the home of ParisDailyPhoto!! I don't know if all of this has enabled him to find a position though... Check his website if you understand French.

Scary tunnel!

No, Paris is not all about luxury shopping areas and chic little concealed passages! You can also come across doggy tunnels like this that probably take you somewhere if you're lucky enough to make it through the other end before getting stabbed or robbed! I found it in a pretty residential area though, in the 15th arrondissement (at rue Jacques Baudry). It goes under a bunch of railway tracks that originate at Gare Montparnasse. I hope this is not too creepy for you to start the Weekend!

Christmas Week

It's Christmas week in Paris and people are not only looking for these very last gifts that they still haven't found yet (I'm sure you see exactly what I mean!) but also for the perfect dish to serve on Christmas eve or at lunch on the 25th. I'm a fish person personally so if I may send a personal message to the part of my family that is hosting me for Christmas this year, here is what I would love to have ;-) I took this photo at La halle aux poissons, 69 rue Castagnary, in the 15th arrondissement). A little far from the center, but definitely the largest and the best in Paris.

Not far from the Eiffel Tower, there is a sort of business center called Cap 15, that companies can use for special events (including a nice terrace over the Seine and overlooking the Eiffel Tower. The building in itself is pretty tacky, but they recently installed these modern frescoes all around it, which gives it a pretty cool effect. If you want a personal detail, this is also the building where I did one of my first training periods, when I was a student... (well, at that time it was not a business center but very old offices that they actually demolished to build this one, that shows you how old I am LOL!).

What? This is only mid November and it already snowed?! And no, I did not take this photo in Canada, but yesterday in Paris ;-) Explanation: for a conference, I had to go to Heavent, a trade show that is currently taking place at Porte de Versailles in the 15th arrondissement. This show is dedicated to events planning and all that revolves around this industry. There were lots of service providers that operate in this field, including a fake snow maker. Here you go LOL!

Could that look more like winter colors? I don't think so! I took this photo on the Ile des Signes, the little island located between the 15th and the 16th arrondissement, I already mentioned when I posted the Statue of Liberty photo. The bridge you can see is only used by metros. Temperature in Paris for tomorrow Monday : 1 to 4 (34 to 39 Farenheit and 0 to 4 (32 to 39 Farenheit) on Tuesday. Brrrrr...

Automobile show 2010

Every other year in Paris the Mondial de l'automobile (the world automobile show) takes place at VIParis, a big exhibition center at Porte de Versailles. I'm not too big on cars to be honest, so I don't really look forward to this "big" event. Only this year I visited hall 8, dedicated to old cars and it really made my visit worth it. Great find really. I loved it. I took a few photos (that you can see in this little Animoto) and selected this one for my photo du jour. Italians are the best when it comes to designing cars I say!

If your were in Paris at the moment, you would find a lot of signs like this! During the summer the city turns into a giant work in progress - there are no less than 5,125 streets in Paris for a total of 2,918 km (1,813 miles)! The good side is that pavements and sidewalks are pretty well kept, the bad side is that in July, where a lot of Parisians are still home, the traffic is absolutely dreadful. Even some train tracks are impacted: hence the complete shut down of traffic between Gare d'Austerlitz and Invalides until August 21st, due to the refection of all the tunnels... God, I would not like to be in charge of a city like Paris LOL!

Let me introduce you to... Santa Rita, the Patron Saint of the lost causes! (Read all about her on Wikipedia, if you're interested). I found her church by coincidence in the 15tharrondissement, where I had a meeting. The church in itself is not really spectacular, but the story is. It claims to belong to the "Church of France" better known as Gallicane (again, more on Wikipedia!), a church that accepts the Roman church authority (including the one of the Pope) to a limited extent. Not to forget, on a lighter note, that every year in this Church, people can bring their animals (and not only pets, according to the poster!) to be christened... I know, it's a little odd!

A night at Bollywood

I spent last evening at Bollywood! You know this part of Mumbai dedicated to Indian movies... OK, you're right I'm lying, I stayed in good old Paris. But I still got to spend 2 hours in front of La fabuleuse histoire de Bollywood show at Porte de Versailles, clapping my hands and yelling "Shava" like crazy. These Indian dancers must be on something illegal to have so much energy! Anyway, I had a real blast! Please forgive the poor photo quality that is all I managed to take (I was too scared of being caught!) and I just wanted to share a little bit of my Parisian night time!

A window to the Eiffel Tower

I had lunch on a Péniche (a flat barge made for rivers) on the Seine today and it was a real treat because the weather was really fantastic. It was not that kind of boats that run up and down the river while you have lunch or dinner, but one that companies can rent for a party or any event and that stays along the banks. This one belongs to La Compagnie des Bâteaux à roue (the Paddle wheel boats company), it is called Le Clipper Paris and it's beautifully decorated (click here to visit their site, then look for "The boats", then "Le Clipper Paris"). As you can see, the Eiffel Tower is not far from it!
