Japonese Tourists

I often heard Americans "worrying" that Parisians may spot them right away because of their sneakers, caps, white socks... you name it. As if it mattered... Anyway. I thought of that when I saw these Japonese tourists at the Louvre the other day. No Parisians would ever consider using an umbrella to protect himself from the sun! Sunny days are much too scarce in Paris, we surely don't want to miss a single ray, when the sun is shining LOL!

The Mask!

I don't know if you remember, but I already showed you one of these masks last October and I know some of you find them scary, but I can't help being captivated by them. Unlike "simple" graffiti, they are strongly glued to walls, facades or, in the present case bridge (I took this photograph at Le Pont du Louvre). Like I already explained, they represent the face of Gregos, the artist who makes - and glue - them!

Soaking in culture!

I passed by the Louvre today and it was really hot - I'm talking hot!. The tourists are suffering too, so they found a nice way of admiring the Louvre and its pyramid, while refreshing themselves a little... I found it was cool - and I'm surprised they let them do that as a sign makes it clear that jumping into the water is strictly prohibited. As for me, I'll wait for Paris Plage which is due to open today (Tuesday 20th of July)!!

Sailing...

You may think that since there is no sea in Paris, it is difficult to sail... Well, it's not true! There are about 10 recreation centers around Paris where you can enjoy sailing, windsurfing, kayaking... One of them (located in Choisy-le-Roy) is only about 15 minutes away from the center of Paris (check the list - in French only - here). Of course, I did not not take this photo there... But at the Tuileries gardens, where they also offer sailing... but with toy boats that they rent by the hour (for 4 euros)! God did I love that when I was a child LOL!

White Balloons

What is this lady doing with these balloons in the middle of the bushes?! Sorry, I'm too tired right now to tell you the whole story... You will have to wait until tomorrow to find out! I know the suspense is probably unbearable (LOL) but that is the way it is. You can take a guess in the meantime...

Sunset

I know it's a classic, but I never get tired of it. I took it last night while the sun was going to bed... and the sky was still cloudy. For those of you who would not know: on the left La Conciergerie, on the right Les voies sur Berge (a sort of express way that the mayor of Paris wants to close and turn into a pedestrian area) and in the background Le Pont Neuf. Comme to the 5th PDP picnic this Sunday (June 6) at 1 PM you will see more or less the same scenery except that the sky will be deep blue! More details on this Facebook Page

5th PDP Picnic

Even though some of you may have seen my unforgettable number in this video, today is the official 5th PDP picnic invitation post. For once it will take place on a Sunday (June 6th) and around lunch time so that we can take advantage of the sun (I'm sure the gods will watch over us!). The location is "as usual" the embankment at the end of rue de l'Amiral Coligny near the Louvre. More on Facebook. I hope a lot of you will be able to attend.

Flower Power for Joan

I pass by this statue of Joan of Arc every evening to go back home and last night I saw it was all covered in flowers. Apparently a Catholic organization marched for Joan Sunday and left a few bouquets around the statue to celebrate the day she freed Orleans in 1429. I understand their agenda was more political than really to keep her memory ;-) BTW, as I already mentioned it here, there is a similar statue in Philadelphia in the US that I had the chance to photograph - and post on PDP - in 2007.

Admiring

I took this photo last evening through the windows of Le Comptoir des Petits Champs, a very nice restaurant in the 1st arrondissement, where I was having dinner. The man was all dressed up like he'd just left the opera or something but I found out later that he was the porter of Le Grand Véfour, one of the finest restaurants in Paris. I don't why, but I love this scene.

I love rien, I'm Parisien!

Here is a sticker I've been willing to show you for a long time, but never managed to photograph it the right way. Last evening, I did. Here is the story. Parisians have the reputation of being very blasé, of having seen and done everything and of not being very sensitive to anything. A guy (Stéphane Lecourbe) had the idea of turning this reputation into a slogan: "I love rien, I'm Parisien", which not only rhymes perfectly, but also sounds pretty funny. I cannot say it's a real success yet, but you still see a few bumper stickers like this one quite often throughout the streets of Paris. And I'm sure that if it was marketing more seriously it could be a big hit. If you're interested, click here...

(Still) made in France!

I already told you the the French find it tacky to be "too" patriotic. On some occasions, however, it is OK to be proud of being French; this includes wars, football or rugby matches and... French goods! We even have a trade show - called "Made in France", not very original! - to promote them. The show is not about large industrial world leaders like Dassault (airplanes), or Alstom (trains) or even Dannon - Danone in French -(dairy products), but about small and medium businesses related to fashion or haute couture is general (like the famous embroider Lesage who is now a school). I just saw the outside of the show (it takes place inside the Paris Chamber of Commerce) unfortunately, but I'm sure it was really worth the visit.

Metro Palais Royal

That's it! As of today, I'm a "real Parisian": I have a metro pass! A lot of people (ie Guille, PHX...) made fun of me when they heard it was such a big deal for me to take the metro, but what can I say, I hate it! Not only because it's crowed, but because it's very slow (well compared to riding a scooter...) Anyway, to "celebrate" I took a photo of what is probably the most photographed metro station in Paris: Palais Royal. It's famous because it was (re)designed by Jean-Michel Othoniel, as the "Kiosque des noctambules" (Kiosk of the night-walkers) in 2000 for the centenary of the Metro. Only this time I tried to take a different angle (see a broader view in this very very old post!).

Lunch at Colette

I don't think I ever told you about "Colette". Not this Colette, but the store named Colette, at rue Saint Honoré (#213). It's a very trendy place where a lot of avant-garde stuff are shown for the first time before hitting "normal" retail. I went there today for the launch of a new service by Blackberry and took advantage of   my visit to try the buffet! Since it's a trendy place, the food is trendy too... Hence a Canelé "wrap" stuffed with foie gras and apple to die for (see here)!
