Louis the XIIIth

I'm sure you will have recognized ;-) this  is Louis the XIIIth - well a statue of Louis the XIIIth, as the real one dying some time ago (1643!). This statue was made by Dupaty and Cortot in 1829 in replacement for an old bronze statue from 1639 (I took this shot at Place des Vosges, BTW). If you look carefully, you will see a plane in the background (in the sky, obviously!); quite a historical hiatus, isn't?! Have a nice weekend everyone.

Restaurant Le Derrière

Today (well Tuesday) I had lunch with the communications manager of Fotolia, who took me to an amazing restaurant I never knew of. It's called Le Derrière and it's really a place you have to visit if you come to Paris. It's a 3 story building (pretty old - it's located in Le Marais, near the Pompidou Center) with many rooms that you can rent out for a party (like this one in the photo). The ground floor is more like a "classic" restaurant even though the decor is everything, but classic! Have a look at a few other shots on the Making of... And read a critic by La Fourchette.

Culture menu!

Paris bridges and buildings offer a wide variety of photo opportunities I agree, but sometimes the most casual scenes you come across also make interesting photos. Hence this one, that I took last night at the Pompidou Center, where I attended Le Carrefour des Possibles, a very interesting event - in which they used polltogo, which, of course, made it even more interesting ;). On the way out, I saw this perfectly lit big panel which lists the Pompidou Center events of the month and pulled out my camera as quickly as I could!

Encore!

Sometimes I really wonder who is behind a graffiti? I found this one in Le Marais - I don't remember well exactly - and I simply liked the graphical design. Encore in French means "again" (but we don't "encore" artists on stage like you do in English, we "bis" them!); Anyway I will probably never find out what this mysterious sign is all about. Sorry for the lack of inspiration, but I'm super busy at the moment... (Not to forget that I still have my Christmas shopping in my to do list!)

Another eye on Paris

I came across these intriguing posters near the Beaubourg area (Pompidou center). I thought they were meant to promote a new clothing line or something of the kind... I was wrong. It appears that Buster Adams is a photographer and that he also takes - very cool - photos of Paris (among many other subjects). Take a look at his very creative website and visit the "I am a tourist/Je suis un touriste" section where you'll see Paris though his eyes.

Music!

No Paris scenery, no historical facts... today, just a lifestyle photo. I see more and more people with huge - well I consider to be huge! - headsets like this in the streets of Paris and I can't helping thinking of the "old times", when headsets used to be more like ear plugs ;-) Am I showing my age? Er... yes probably LOL! I like the photo though.

Sunday at rue Montorgueil

Lovely day in Paris again this Sunday... I went to rue Montorgueil, a famous street near les Halles, that used to be a working class area in the old times and is now a "Bobo" hangout (bobo stands for BOurgeois BOhème, that is people with money who want to live the Bohème lifestyle). It's a very nice street, no cars - or almost none! - lots of little cafés and shops, historical restaurants like L'Escargot-Montorgueil that was founded in 1875, or the famous Stohrer patisserie founded in 1730 that Queen Elisabeth visited in 2004 (they are pretty proud of it!). It's also the street where this video clip was shot!

Theme day : fences (and walls!)

In France - and in most European countries - November 1st is a holiday, as it's the day where living people go and visit the dead, in cemeteries. It's also a theme day (check it here) within the City Daily Photo blog community. And today's theme is Fences! I thought of showing you a fence within a cemetery, but I did not find any... So instead here is a wall, that I shot in Le Marais, at rue des Archives. A little less theme day compliant, but a little merrier ;-) I really wonder what's behind this wall!

Cold attack!

It had to happen... The summer is definitely gone in Paris, and the temperatures are about to drop dramatically - they said the thermometer would go down to 2°C (35°F) tomorrow morning (Thursday). To "celebrate" here is a photo of the "famous" mantelpiece of the Murano hotel (or rather as they like to call themselves the "Murano Urban Resort"!") at Boulevard du Temple in the 3rd arrondissement. This mantelpiece is located at the entrance, and it's really worth the look.

Michael Jackson lookalike

Michael Jackson is dead, but he was in Paris last Sunday... Miracle? Not really, it was just one of his many lookalike that I photographed near Beaubourg, in front of the Saint Merri church. Nothing extraordinary - there are probably thousands of those throughout the world - but I like the framing of this photo.

Let's have fun!

Yesterday I attended a Flashmob (that is a "sudden mobilization") performed by Les Tistics, a group of young actors and comedians. They gathered near Beaubourg and started dancing in the middle of the crowd as if they just happened to be there all together! The funny part is that they danced to an English language hit ("I've got a feeling", by the Black Eyed Peas) that they litteraly translated into French. A good way for the passers-by to realize how shallow the words are... you can hear/see it for yourself here (thanks to Heather, who found this link and posted it in the comments box. You can even see me half a second at the very beginning of the video - in the pink shirt!).

Sotto Sopra

With this photo, I feel like I'm going back in time; this is the typical type of shot I would post when I started PDP! (Remember this one?). I found these chairs at Sotto Sopra, an Italian restaurant located at 74, rue des Archives, in the Marais. Nothing extraordinary, expect that I loved their color and the way they are set on the sidewalk. BTW, if you happen to visit the Salon de la photo in Paris, I'll be talking about PDP -and its secrets! - on Sunday October 9 at 16:00 pm at stand E15, from l'Agora du Net.

Loneliness

Amazing how a big city is full of people and how sometimes, you can get very lonely or isolated. I thought of the study I read last year about loneliness in France, when I saw this lady, alone on this wall by Beaubourg. The study (by Fondation de France) says that one French person in ten lives by him(her)self and that one in ten also, has less than 3 personal conversations per year. I find it hard to believe, but it seems to be true. Not a very joyful note, I agree...

Inanimate objects...

I took this photo through the window of a mannequin store in the rue Réaumur and it made me think right away of a famous quote by French Poet Alphonse de Lamartine: "Inanimate objects do you have a soul?" For none of the "people" in this scene - even the guy in the black suit! - are real.

The Mask!

Another discovery of one of these embedded masks that you can find everywhere in Paris. Let me remind you that they are made by Gregos, an street artist who started posting white/blank faces about 3 years ago. He started introducing color at the beginning of 2009. I love them. I photographed this one at rue de Picardie in the 3rd arrondissement.

Peace!

Here is a "graffito" I found near Republique, and I thought it was most appropriate for today. Have a peaceful Sunday everyone, we all deserve it. Update. Have a look at one of the Tributes the French made today at Trocadero.

Paris Dehli photo ?

Yesterday (Saturday) I went to see the Paris Dehli Bombay(Mumbai) exhibit at the Beaubourg center. It was really amazing (see a little video here). Not that I "understood" everything (being non Indian, I don't have all the cultural codes to understand everything), but I enjoyed every single part of it. What I loved the most? The fact that you're miles away from the traditional Indian culture: no Taj Mahal nor Maharadja palace in the exhibit, but real modern stuff! All the time I thought of Rahul Chittella, a talented young Indian film maker whose work I got to discover thanks to PDP.

Pavement painter

I always wonder how these painters manage to get the "big picture" with the right proportions while working so close to their subject. Then I think of Michelangelo and the ceiling of the Sistine chapel and... well I realize it was pretty much the same, only the other way around. Anyway I love this photo (and yes the dog has a lot to do with it!). FYI, I took it at Beaubourg.

Chuuuttt!

Sorry the "stunning views of Paris" series has to stop ;-) I have to go back to another Paris classic: Jeff Aerosol, one of the most famous street artists in Paris. So famous, that the 4th arrondissement city hall asked him to paint this huge fresco on a wall located at Place Stravinsky (where the famous Niki de Saint Phalle fountain - the one you see in the foreground - is located). I love it. More on the dedicated website, on Jeff Aerosol website and in this little video (where you can see the progress of the painting).

polltogo invades Paris!

You don’t know about polltogo?? It’s just the coolest tool to vote and get feedback from anyone with a mobile device! I’m kidding, of course. There’s no way you could have heard of polltogo, as... it officially launched out of beta today! How do I know? Easy, I’m one the co-founders. ;-) Want to try it? Get your cell phone out, click to enlarge the photo above and have your device read the QR code. If it doesn’t work, you can also type p2.gg/ny in your phone’s web browser. Can you help us spread the word? Check my little note and/or visit polltogo.com.

PS: Don’t worry, I will surely be very busy this coming decade(!), but PDP will continue, as always...
