Good old stove
I'm full! I had lunch at Chez Paul, then had a pretty filling snack (galette) at 5 and could not resist a little choux à la crème at 8! Not very reasonable, I know... Anyway, all this because I wanted to show you this beautiful stove (probably wood fueled) that I found precisely at Chez Paul (a restaurant near Bastille, I already mentioned). They don't use it any more, but I've found it's a nice change from today's boring stoves! Have a great Sunday, stay warm - unless you're in Australia or New Zealand, or anywhere in the Southern hemisphere!

Paris menagerie...
There are many many animals in Paris, and I'm not only talking about pets. There is a big zoo (in Vincennes, which is very close to Paris - and currently closed until 2104), the Ménagerie du jardin des plantes (with about a 1 000 animals!), le jardin d'acclimatation in the Bois de Boulogne (West of Paris) and a few other places where you can mostly see birds or fish (like in the superb Trocadero Aquarium). One ting is for sure, there are NO tigers hanging out at Bastille, unless they are stuffed, like the ones I photographed ;-). Busy crossing
Technically it's far from being a perfect photo; it's blurry and dark... And though I love it! It allows to "feel" what a busy crossing in the middle of rainy Paris feels like. Not to mention the typical Parisienne on her bike in the middle! Bonne semaine everyone... Paris will be rainy this week, but still as beautiful ;-)

Look!

My scooter broke down a few days ago and I had to take it to a garage... Last evening I went there to pick it up and on the way, I came across this stunning painted wall at rue Oberkampf. It was made by Mosko Associés, a group of street artists that actually started in the Moskowa area (hence their name), an old Paris quarter that has been renovated and completed in 2004. Check their website.

The perfect walk...
No I did not take this photo in the middle of Le Bois de Boulogne or de Vincennes, but right behind the Bastille place (you can even see the open air metro station sign in the foreground) where boats owners can dock their yacht. This place is called Le port de l'Arsenal, I already mentioned it many times (like last summer), but I'm never tired of showing it! Not to forget that it's a fabulous place to have a walk - or even fish! BTW did you notice the beautiful light and the sun reflection? Well, that's the kind of weather we're enjoying in Paris at the moment. Amazing (I did not even turn on the heating yesterday!). Very unusual...

La Baronne de Paname!

Each city has its characters. People that you notice either because they dress differently, act differently or think differently... Mélina, aka La Baronne de Paname (Paname is a cute slang word we use to call Paris), is one of these. She loves the typical "bals musette" (dances where people used to do the Waltz Musette to accordion music in-between the two World Wars and just after). She even organizes them sometimes, like this Saturday at the Pavillon Baltard. Want to go? Check out her Myspace page.

Paris Port
Where did I take this photo? In Camargues, where I’m currently spending the weekend? In Normandy, where I often go? Nope! In the middle of Paris! As a matter of fact if you look closely you can even see the Génie de la Bastille (the little guy up top the Bastille column) in the background of the photo. Believe it or not, there no less than 19 ports within the Paris area and they are not all for goods delivery. This one is called Le Port de l’Arsenal, it’s a “Port de Plaisance”, that is dedicated to yachts only. You can rent a spot for only 2 306 € a year if you have a small boat and … if you find room ;-)

Happy Independence Day

Since I have a lot of American visitors, let me dedicate today's post to them as it's the 4th of July! Thanks to PDP friends (Guille, Michael, Stuart and Elizabeth), I had lunch at Blues Bar-B-Q, yesterday (Sunday). Co owned by delightful Diana from Texas, it is a real American restaurant where I discovered pulled BBQ pork, corn bread, genuine coleslaw and of course, an ice cream float! Now that's a festive occasion!

Art!!
I know that modern art is not an easy topic to deal with, but there is a lot in Paris and from time to time I like to report about it. Thus, this week, I went to La Maison Rouge, an art gallery located near Bastille, where they celebrated the launch of Slash Magazine, an online magazine that... deals with modern art. The main exhibit was dedicated to Winnipeg, and this little sculpture was part of it, I believe. Don't ask me... Maybe one of the "treasures" that will be part of the huge treasure hunt that the Paris city hall is organizing this Saturday!

Er...

Weird and enigmatic graffiti I found at rue Léon Frot. It says "Waiting for the accident"... What accident? A place one, a nuclear one, a new economic crisis? I really would like to know what the "artist" had in mind when posting this... Anyway I thought it was funny, in a provocative way. Have a nice - accident free - Saturday ;-)

Telephone booth
I took this photograph very recently in a restaurant, but don't go thinking we still use these od telephone booths! They belong to the 50th, when mobile phones did not exist and when even having a home line was hard (in 1968, the rumor had it that half of the French were waiting for their phone line, while the other half was waiting for the dial tone!). Now we're very lucky; I pay 35 € per month for my phone line/DSL /cable television access and I don't even pay for my calls anymore, even internationally!

Chez Paul
I'm just out of Chez Paul, a very good - and very French - restaurant near Bastille, where I had dinner with friends. A very nice moment indeed. A place I do recommend if you come to Paris, although you probably already know it since it seems to be one of Paris restaurant milestones (which I did not know!). I had Cote de boeuf and profitéroles; it was yummy ;-)

Thank you Charlie!
Sorry to bother you again with my social life, but I happened to visit another food ans wine place today, a one called La Muse vin (a play on word too complicated to explain!) to attend the launched of a new Web site. It's called Thank you Charlie (now you understand the title of this post!) and its purpose is to allow you to offer a gift to someone near his/her neighborhood. How? Simply by choosing the gift on the site (anything from a pastry to a massage or a wine course...) and by entering the cell number of the gift recipient. The latter then receives an SMS saying "Someone just offered you a gift, come and pick it up at this address". That's it. Hard to tell if this will be successful, but I thought the idea was pretty cool.

France: an aging country...
One of the reasons why the recent law about retirement age was so controversial is that the French are getting older and older and that our life expectancy is also increasing (which is a good news of course, except for our national debt!). The recent figures published by Insee (the French national statistics organization) are formal: by 2060 the French life expectancy will jump from 84 to 91,1 years for women and from 77 to 86 for men. More than that, there will be 200 000 100 year old people against 15 000 today (and 1 150 in the 60's). France is not on top of the world list though, Andorra is! (check this table). BTW, I chose an illustration by MBW, which I believe shows Leornard Nimoy who precisely was not exactly born yesterday ;-)

Le Cyklop
Let me introduce you to Olivier, aka "Le Cyklop". If you're at least a one year follower to PDP, this name should ring a bell as I already talked about him when I photographed one of his early work at Place Saint Sulpice. Le Cyklop uses the Paris bollards and turns them into works of art - especially the round part at their top that he turns into "eyes" (which explains why he calls himself the Cyklop). Nice guy too, I was happy to meet him. See more of his work on his site.

Jeff Aerosol
You know how I love to show you the street artists I come across when I walk through the streets of Paris (see several examples here). The most famous one, to me, is Jeff Aerosol. Last Friday, as I went to the opening of a Urban Art exhibition at Gallery Uni-ver I finally got to meet him (and yes, as you probably have guessed, he is the little man in this photo ;-) As for the blue figure in the foreground it was made by another well-known street artist: Zlotykamien.

When to retire?
There was a big demonstration - and strike - in Paris today. Still about the same issue: the legal age of retirement. The government wants to postpone it by 2 years (from 60 to 62), but the people and the unions are not too happy about that... As always, it is extremely difficult to know how many people were actually in the street (between 1,2 and 2,7 million depending on the sources!), but it is a real concern for sure, even for people who will retire in a very very long time, like the ones in this photo!

Good old French Food!
I'm not Bill Gates, nor a business angel from Silicon Valley, but from time to time I enjoy encouraging young entrepreneurs who have the guts to start their own business. That is what I did for Marc Thouvenin, founder of Regioneo.com a site that promotes genuine French food from the "Terroir" (Provinces). He helps local producers finding customers on the web. Last night he made a little gathering to thank those who invested in his company , but I made sure I stayed away from the fattening stuff and sticked to the organic carrots and cucumbers!
