Paris fashion museum

If there is one last "industry" where the French still have a pretty good position, it's la mode (fashion). No wonder then, that we hold on to it as much as we can... I already mentioned the Institut Français de la Mode, a school that is more a business school dedicated to fashion than an actual designer school), and here is the fashion museum. It's called the Galliera (after the name of the Italian Duchess who once owned the place - a stunning palace surrounded by a 17600 sq meter garden in the heart of the 16th arrondissement!) and it owns no less than 90 000 fashion pieces (from dresses to gloves, fans, umbrellas...). I've never visited it - and I won't before another year and a half for it's currently closed, but the outside is already something!

Life is not a bed of roses

Sorry, after dealing with loneliness yesterday, I just learned about 15 minutes ago, that a friend of mine just lost his 21 year old son in a car accident, and I'm really devastated. Of course such accidents happen daily everywhere in the world, but it seems so unfair (as if death was fair, of course...) that tears can easily come to your eyes when it happens to someone you know. I remembered taking this photo a few weeks ago (at the Pont de l'Alma, just above the tunnel where Diana had a car accident) and, well, as ridiculous as it sounds, it's my way of thinking of my friend right now.

Christmas market
I think I have never shown that many times the Eiffel Tower on PDP than this past month! This time it's from the side of the Trocadero, where, on top of the ice rink, they also have a marché de noël (Christmas market) where you can find anything from Russian dolls to gluewein and French cheeses! Always a great success, and the presence of the iron lady in the background adds a little flavour to it. Last days to complete your Christmas shopping everyone... Mine's completed (99% online this year!)

Skating by the Eiffel Tower...
Paris is really beautiful at the moment, I wish you all could be here! Last evening I discovered by sheer coincidence that they installed an ice rink by the Trocadero, facing the Eiffel Tower (a nice change from the one at Hotel de ville that I photograph every year). Huge success! And what a scenery for a PDP photo!

Splendid door
This door belongs to the Musée d'art moderne de la Ville de Paris, a museum that was built during the 30's, more precisely for the "Exposition internationale des arts et des techniques" (International Exposition dedicated to Art and Technology in Modern Life) that took place in 1937. It was erected on former military lands. Everything in this door is typical of that period, even the font that says Musée de la ville. Beautiful.

Repetto

Repetto is a real French landmark. The name comes from the founder, Rose Repetto, whose son, Roland Petit (who just passed away yesterday at 87), used to come back with injured feet from his classical dance lessons. In 1947 she then decided to make him dancing shoes, that would prevent the pain (as if?!). The famous Pointe and Ballerines were born. Soon, they became THE dancing shoes of the most famous dancers in the world. Now the brand has been repositioned, they sell all sorts of dancing equipment and regular shoes. They have several stores in Paris and many in the world. I took this photo at 36 rue de Passy, in the 16th arrondissement.

Big J(D)ump at the Modern art Musuem
There is a fantastic museum near the Trocadero called the "Musée d'art moderne de la ville de Paris" (that I mentioned several times here). They recently worked redid the main esplanade which was really old and dirty and did a real good job. Only, recently, they installed this roller skate ramp, and now the place is slowly turning into a dump again... Weird.

Caged Eiffel Tower
Everything comes to an end, especially vacation! Time for me to come home after a week in the US (where I finally got to see Washington DC!) and to go back to work... I took this photo at the Trocadero, where they have work going on at the moment (hence the grid). I thought it would give the photo a cool effect and I'm pretty happy with the result. BTW, don't forget, soon the PDP picnic will take place ;-)

Raise your arm
Let's start the week with a smile... I took this photo at Le Trocadéro and I found it funny that both the statue and the painter in the back had their arm up at the same time. Silly I know ;-) FYI this statue is the one of "Herculus taming the buffalo", by Henri Bouchard. It's located at the same level as the one where I took this shot in February 2007. Have a good week start everyone, I'm really enjoying my time off, let me tell you...

Paris market
It's Sunday, time to go to the market... There's nothing like Fresh vegetable and fruit, and we are pretty lucky in Paris for there is always a market near a place we live.I already mentioned it, but I'll say in again, in case you come to Paris and are desperate for food(!), there are 82 food markets in Paris (including 3 organic ones) - you can have the whole list, day by day here. Or course, they less fun than this one...

Admiring ET

I found myself at the Trocadero today and the weather was so fantastic that I could not help but stopping and taking a few photos. I ended up selecting this one for its atmosphere and odd angle. As you can see, it is so warm in Paris at the moment that we will soon have thunderstorms. I don't care for I'm taking a few - well deserved! - days off and won't suffer them! Don't worry, there will still be a photo a day in here and I will stay tuned to PDP, even from vacation ;-)

Classic View
It's like summer in Paris at the moment; evenings are hot, everybody is out and so are the tourists... In fact, I'm just back from a delightful dinner with my father and on the way back home, I could not help but stopping at the Passerelle Debilly and taking this photo. I love this place. You must go there at night if you come to Paris!

New Zealand fashion show
You may remember the day I attended the opening of Koko, a New Zealand fashion store in Le Marais? Well, now I have been invited to a New Zealand fashion show at the NZ Embassy. How cool is that?! It was a delightful evening - people from New Zealand are very welcoming I must say - even if I could not stay until the end, because it was the same day I visited the Rosenblum Collection. I stayed long enough to take tons of photos of course ;-). Check them out in this little Animoto.

Cocktail food
I know a lot of you think I'm a party animal, that I spend my evenings out and that I jump from one gallery opening to another... But I don't! Except yesterday evening where I attended too fabulous events. But shush!, I also have to work and tomorrow is a very early morning as I have to go to Poitiers (a city in the center west of France) for the day. So before I give you some food for thoughts, here is some real food, the one I was offered at one of the places I visited. Sorry that is all I can offer you for today ;-) And before you ask me what this is, well, I simply don't remember (but it was super good!).

Here they come!
Remember? In August 2008, I told you I heard from the grapevine that the clothing brand Abercrombie & Fitch would possibly move in on the Champs Elysées at number 23... Well, I passed by it today and I now have the confirmation! Not that it probably matters to you - nor to me actually, as I am way over the age limit for that kind of stores (I don't like shopping in the dark with music so loud that I can't even talk to a shop "assistant"! - check this if you want a good laugh), but I thought I would show you a bit of the blue sky we're having in Paris at the moment ;-) BTW I just checked, the grand opening is scheduled for May 19th (I doubt they'll invite me after this post ;-))

A terrace with a view

You knew I was fishing for your begging yesterday, when I said the Shangri-La hotel had a stunning view on the Eiffel Tower right!? Of course I was going to post it! So here is is, it took through the door that leads to a little concealed terrace facing the tower. A unique location where I'll try to return in summer. Have a perfect weekend everyone.

Cocktail at Shangri-La Hotel Paris
Last night I attended a party for the opening of the French office of Linkedin, the business networking site, that you probably all know. I went there because I like the Linkedin people, but also because I wanted to see the famous Shangri-La hotel in Paris, where the event took place. The hotel opened last December and it is located in the former house of Prince Roland Bonaparte (Napoleon Bonaparte's grandnephew). Needless to say, the place is absolutely stunning! Did I mention it also has a breathtaking view on the Eiffel Tower?!

Mini !
Even if you're not European you probably know "the Mini", a car that was invented by the British in 1955-57 and got famous throughout the world in the 60's. Well, we still have a few ones in Paris, like this one that I photographed in the 16th arrondissement. I've read that 80% of its length was dedicated to passengers, and only 20% to the engine, which is quite a challenge (and probably was even more at that time)! They (that is BMW, the company that bought the brand in 2000) still make Minis nowadays, but a model that has very little to do with the old one.

Paris Greenhouses

Paris is not all about concrete and Haussmannian buildings... There are also many gardens and... greenhouses! This one is located in the Bois de Boulogne (which technically belongs to Paris) but easy to get to by Metro (stop Porte d'Auteuil). There are 6 000 different kinds of plants, but you can also see mascaron ornaments by Rodin, a stunning fountain... All this was really put together during the 19th century, but was really initiated by Louis the 15th back in 1761!

Dinner at "Bon"!
I had dinner at Bon's last evening, one of these restaurants conceived to attract "the rich crowd". They all use the same recipe: nice location (16th arrondissement), nice decor (by Starck, whose else?!), theme cuisine (Asia something), pouting waiters and priceless prices... In the end the experience was not that bad, after all ; the food is really "bon" (bon means good in French) and the atmosphere was a nice change from Mc Donald's! Shame I did not get to see what makes Bon's pride: its library, nor its fireplace nor its wine room. Maybe next time...
