1910 Paris

We are currently "celebrating" the centennial of the famous 1910 flood (I already mentioned it a long time ago - in 2005!). It was not the worst one (look on the left in the photo, it says that the record was held in 1658 with 8,80 meters, against "only" 8,60 meters in 1910) but it was bad enough to cause a lot of damage. I went to one of the many exhibits that are currently being held about this flood in Paris at the moment - this one is free and held until April at Le Louvre des Antiquaires, near Le Louvre. It's both fascinating and frightening to see what water can do to all these areas that are familiar to you. Again, you don't have to be in Paris to see all this... There is an enormous amount of photo material available on the Internet. Check this for instance or even this little... video!

Climate change?

According to the data, this winter has been colder than the average (have a look at this excellent site to have a better picture) and people - including me! - are really  longing for some warmer weather (mind you at this very moment, I'm not, but that is just because I'm on vacation in the Southern hemisphere!). Usually towards the end of February we have nice rays of sun, and birds start feeling spring coming up... These don't because they're fake! I photographed them on the Quai (the river banks) where they have a flower and animal  market).

La Samaritaine: work in progress

You may know of La Samaritaine, the large department store founded in 1869 by Ernest Cognacq and Marie-Louise Jaÿ located near the Pont Neuf... (I already posted twice about it). It's currently closed while it is being turned into a hotel, offices, stores, etc. Before it's done (2013), they installed a huge painted wall around it. On this wall you can read about the history of the store and see a few photos and ads from when La Samaritaine was the place to shop at. If you're not currently in Paris and have no way of learning about this Paris monument, well, you can always check Wikipedia!

Stupid is cool!

It's a weird advertising campaign I came across today at the Palais Royal (well, Place Colette, to be more accurate). It promotes... Stupidity! Well apparently it's a little more subtle than that of course (according to what the messages say, stupid people take more risks than smart ones, which is seen as a positive thing). Intriguing and original. BTW, the clothes brand Diesel is behind all this (check this little video).

Inside Repetto

Do you remember this photo? I took it at Repetto a famous store at rue de la Paix, where they sell tutus and ballet stuff. This time I took the inside of the shop, where they have their ballet shoes (well so I suppose, as I'm not really ans expert and I took the photo from the outside). I really love the display. BTW if you're into classical music someone passed me a link today that is really fantastic. Check it, it's called Medici.tv and it allows you to see, live, concerts, operas and, I suppose... ballets.

Sunny morning

The past days (since my return from vacation) have been pretty hard. I have been extremely tired, it was dark and cold, and I really felt like hibernating! And this morning, when I woke up, the sun was shining. I then went through the Carrousel du Louvre (two 'r's in French to Carrousel!) like every morning and saw this. And "this" put a smile on my face that remained all day... "This" is the arch of the Carrousel, it was built in 1806 to commemorate Napoleon's military victories (more on Wikipedia). It's a beautiful monument and with this light it's even more beautiful. did you notice the Ferris wheel in the back?

The new Buren columns

If you came to Paris you probably saw the Colonnes de Buren, an piece of part made of several columns located in le Palais Royal. Whatever one may think about these columns (they were - and still are - pretty controversial when they were erected in the first place in 1986) they needed to be redone (as I already mentioned here). And here they are. Brand new! To be honest I did not notice much difference, but there must be one!

Classic Sunday pic!

I had to get up at 6 am on a Saturday morning just to take this photo for you! No I did not... I'm kidding. In fact I took it much later, but it was still grayish/blueish and covered, so they left the street lamps on. There is not much to say about it: it's Paris, it's La Pyramide du Louvre and yes, it's beautiful (and for once empty!). Have agreat Sunday everyone, I still find it hard to recover from the Jet-lag on my end (but I know I mustn't complain!).

Guaranteed Good Food

I took this photo at Le café de l'Epoque, a typical Paris restaurant in the 1st arrondissement. I took it because of what a friend of mine told me once: “food is always good in restaurants where they have Vichy table clothes and lace at the window”! I don’t think this advice works all the time, but it surely shows that the place is very traditional and that it should have an influence on the food they serve. In this particular case it worked!

Joyeux No "L"

It's today! When this photo shows up on PDP, I'll be unwrapping my presents, feeling sorry for having eaten too much and not looking forward for more food tomorrow! But every year it's the same and I'm actually happy it is. So let me wish you all a merry Christmas. FYI, I took this photo in one of the windows of Le Bazar de l'hôtel de ville (BHV).

Christmas is close...

Yes, Christmas is close, as you can see. There are already cadeaux (gifts) everywhere in Paris waiting to be picked up (this one probably belongs to a giant ;-)) No I'm not on drugs, I'm just happy today is my last day at work before January 6th and I'm really looking forward to having some rest. BTW, I photographed this huge canvas on the facade of Le Louvre des Antiquaires, a shopping mall dedicated to antiques, opposite to the Louvre Museum. They obviously are renovating the building (yes, like in yesterday's photo!)

Happy recyling!

Apparently only one of two plastic bottles are currently being recycled in Paris. To draw people's attention on this major situation(!) the city of Paris, the Coca Cola company and the Designpack gallery have teamed up and built several Christmas decorations out of plastic bottles. I chose to photograph two of the four big Christmas trees they installed at Place André Malraux in the 1st arrondissement. 1,300 bottles were necessary to make them. Really cool.

Frozen Wheel

Come on, don't you act surprised... You knew I would show you the big Ferris wheel of the Jardin des Tuileries one of these days... ;-) Well, now is the time. Why? because I just passed by it a few minutes ago and because due to the cold the Neptune fountain is all frozen (click in the photo if you want to see better). Really nice, I'm sure you're going to love this photo as much as I enjoyed taking it (well I'm glad I had gloves on though...)

Christmas Tree

Even if the financial crisis has made it difficult, Père Noël included, the city of Paris has saved some money for the Christmas decorations. Hence this "Christmas tree", that I photographed at Les Halles tonight. This is probably the last year Parisians will enjoy decorations there as the whole area is going to change; the work will strat in 2010 and end in 2016 - and cost about 760 million euros!). If you're interested in the place, have a look at Projetleshalles.fr, it is made by two people who live there and who want to show us through their lens the progression of the work. Excellent idea (disclaimer, I know one of them!).

Paris Photo

Every year the International Paris Photo show takes place at the Carrousel du Louvre. I don't always go, but this year, a visitor to PDP who happened to be in Paris,  invited me to join him there. It's a beautiful exhibit, with lots of fantastic photos (and some less fantastic!) in a perfect environment. It would have been far too easy to take a photo of a photo to post today, so instead let me offer you a little piece of the press office. I did not plan to use it really, but after I blew it up a little that's the one I thought was the best.

Christmas is coming, Eric is getting fat...

The holiday season is approaching... You can tell because it's getting cold and the Christmas decorations are out. In Le village Royal - off La rue Royale, that takes you to La Place de la Concorde - red pine trees have suddenly grown! Probably a genetic modification ;-) BTW, here are the final results for the PDP calendar. Now I need to make it!

Die Berliner Mauer in Paris

In Paris we also celebrated the fall of the Berlin wall... There was a big event on the Place de la Concorde last evening between 7 and 8 with music and light shows but it was hard to see anything to be honest. As I anticipated it would be, I passed by the Place de la Concorde this morning precisely to take a photo and here it is! If you're a regular visitor to PDP, you know that I was fortunate enough to go to Berlin on November 10, 1989. This morning I found the photos I took there. Here are some of them...

Apple has its store in Paris

Curiously enough, even though France is one of the major markets for Apple, there was no Apple store in Paris until... this morning 10 am. The famous brand opened its first outlet in the Carrousel du Louvre, a very prestigious location. Of course, as always with this "cult", some adepts had started queuing at 6am (reports the Agence France Presse) possibly because of the incentive: the first 5,000 visitors would receive an Apple T-shirt! When I went there around 2 pm, the line was much less important, but the security crew was still everywhere... I'm glad I just bought myself a brand new Windows 7 PC and an Android phone and did not have to queue a single minute for that! LOL
