Christmas (de)Lights

I love the Christmas period. Not only do you have lights and decorations everywhere in Paris, but also - and specifically! - into churches too. Hence this photo I took inside Nôtre Dame (the same church where I took this photo). Now is the time to think of buying your Christmas gifts everyone, you don't want to find yourself in the middle of the crowd on the very last day, do you?!

Season Classic!

I know what you're gonna say... Again! Yes again, every year it's the same, but it's still beautiful. In case you would not know what it is (which I seriously doubt!) , this the famous Notre Dame Cathedral, located in the middle of l'île de la Cité. Every year towards the end of November they erect an enormous Christmas tree in front of it (of course it's does not look so big in this photo ;-) and it's always breath taking. Last year, at the same time, it was super cold and snowy. This year, it's extraordinary mild.

Eglise Saint Roch

It's been a while since I've shown you a Paris Church... So here is Saint Roch, a beautiful church located at rue Saint Honoré. It was built between 1653 and 1722, it's one of the largest ones in Paris (even though it is hard to tell as it is surrounded with buildings) and it is known for being "the home of the artists" as many of them are buried there. It's also the place where Marquis de Sade got married, I just saw in Wikipedia!).

The naked truth!

I actually did not know how to photograph this sculpture initially (a beautiful piece by Daniel Hourdé called "La vérité mise à nue par ses thuriféraires" (don't ask me to translate!), then I found this angle which I find interesting even if you cannot really see the sculpture! Anyway, in the background you probably recognized the Saint-Germain Church. As you can see the rain has returned in Paris...

Dinner outside

Here is where I had dinner with a few friends to celebrate a birthday! The weather was gorgeous, the scenery (well, see for yourself!) and the food exquisite - Not to mention that since it's a no car street, it was very quiet . On the cultural side, you should know that this is the Gervais-Saint-Protais church, an exceptionnal place, both outside and inside. Now, are you jealous of me?!

Where is everybody?

Those of you who visited Paris will probably think this is a fake! Why? Because generally, at this very famous location (Le Sacré Coeur), there are dozens of people running around, like little ants... (depending on the sources, it's the second or third most visited places in Paris, with 10 million visitors per year!) , but not this morning at "dawn", when I passed by there just before going to a meeting in the neighborhood. Enjoy...

Inspiring moment

A few days ago, I was lucky enough to have been invited to "un aperitif" by Genie, an American citizen from Mobile, Alabama, who fell in love with Paris a long time ago and blogs about it whenever she comes here. I had a very nice time, with delightful people (I even ran into Julie from Sydney-Eye, that I met in Sydney 2 years ago (isn't the City Daily Photo family fun?!)) and took the opportunity of being near the Saint Roch church to take this photo. Stunning painting.

Sacré Coeur at dawn

It's been a while since I've shown you Sacré Coeur. I swear it's not a mock-up, although it may look like one ;-) I took this photo from far away in the 18th arrondissement and I don't think I've ever photographed it from that side. Anyway, by now, you probably already know this church by heart. It's located on top of Montmartre, was built around 1875 and 1914, and it's one of the major landmarks of Paris (and apparently the 5th  most visited place in France. I bet you cannot guess what the top 4 are!)

Sunny Paris

This weekend I went to buy sport shoes at Decathlon, near La Madeleine church and when I came out of the store, there it was, all  golden because of a ray of sun  do yo know me, I pulled my trigger! It's a classic, I know, but that's also what PDP is about : a scary tunnel one day and a magnificent building the next day! BTW, did you know that it took 85 years to build this church (it was completed in 1845) and that it was almost turned into a railway station in 1837! (More here, if you're interested). Have a great week everyone, mine will be pretty busy, but I'll still be here ;-)

Nativity Scene

The Christians believe that Jesus was born in a stable surrounded by a his parents (Joseph and Mary), a donkey, an ox and a few shepherds. It is generally called a Nativity scene and you find many everywhere in Christian countries like France . Here is one of them, that I found on the door of the Notre Dame de Lorette church. Really beautiful.

A Swedish moment

Don't ask me why - probably because the terribly cold wave we have in Paris at the moment comes from Northern Europe, I had lunch at the Paris Swedish Church where the Paris Swedish community had their annual Christmas market. Not surprisingly I had salmon, a few smoked reindeer slices, a bit of ginger bread and a glass of delicious "Glögg" (Mulled wine). On the way out I stepped inside the Church and admired its stunning Christ statue. Nice unusual moment - especially in Paris! (And yes, before you ask: ALL the furniture they have on site is Ikea made ;-))

Another classic view

Here is what you can see if you walk down the street from Metro station Richelieu Drouot to the Galeries Lafayette or Printemps department stores - Precisely at rue Laffitte, a little narrow street in the 9th arrondisemment. You will have recognized the Sacré Choeur of course, in the background, but that is not the only church in this photo. You can also see Notre Dame de Lorette in the foreground. I already posted the same view a few years ago, but I passed by it again today and I did not resist taking another shot.

To all lost causes!

Let me introduce you to... Santa Rita, the Patron Saint of the lost causes! (Read all about her on Wikipedia, if you're interested). I found her church by coincidence in the 15tharrondissement, where I had a meeting. The church in itself is not really spectacular, but the story is. It claims to belong to the "Church of France" better known as Gallicane (again, more on Wikipedia!), a church that accepts the Roman church authority (including the one of the Pope) to a limited extent. Not to forget, on a lighter note, that every year in this Church, people can bring their animals (and not only pets, according to the poster!) to be christened... I know, it's a little odd!

Hopital Saint Joseph Chapel

My father is currently in the Hospital Saint Joseph in the 14th arrondissement (nothing to worry about, just a few arteries to unblock(!) He's now perfectly fine). Of course I visit him regularly and this gave me the opportunity to discover a nice little chapel at the center of the premises. It's not very surprising as this hospital was originally built by the Catholics - and also managed by them until 1958.

Ascension

Today (Thursday) is a holiday in France because the Catholics are celebrating L'Ascension, the day - according to the Christian doctrine - where Jesus ascended to heaven following to his resurrection. It always takes place on a Thursday (that is exactly 40 days after easter Sunday) and most people take a day off on Friday to either go away of take some rest. I'm one of these people! I took this photo in Saint Sulpice and, well, I thought it was most appropriate for today.

Notre Dame du Travail

About two weeks ago, right after I posted the photo of this church, I received an email saying "In 1970 I visited "Notre Dame du Travail", a church that is also worth visiting..." I did some research, and found out that yes, by all means this church is definitely a must see and that, incidentally, very few Parisians even know about it. It was built around 1900 for the workers who used to build the pavilions for the world exhibitions that took place in Paris that took place at that time. This Church is fascinating indeed, because it looks like a regular Roman church, except that its frame is made of cast iron. See another view here.

A must visit church

I'm always amazed to see that even after decades in Paris, there are still churches that I don't know. This one, for instance - which is actually a basilica - I discovered for the first time last evening while I was wandering in the 7th arrondissement. It's called Sainte Clotilde, it's located on a little, charming square, and it's absolutely stunning. I could not see the inside though, because it was too late, but I'll be back. You have to see it if you come to Paris!

Saint Jean-Baptiste de Belleville

Few tourists go off the beaten track, that is outside the very center of Paris (within the first 9th arrondissements let's say). And though there are treasures to see further away from the center. Hence this superb church located on rue de Belleville (number 139) - precisely called Saint Jean-Baptiste de Belleville - which is one of the first neo-Gothic churches in Paris. It was built between 1854 and 1859 and was conceived by Jean-Baptiste-Antoine Lassus. If you want to see and visit it you just need to go to Metro station Jourdain.

Invalides Dome

I'm just back from a dinner at dear friend's who live in the 7th arrondissement. On the way to their home, I passed by the back of the Invalides and I noted these green statues just to the right of the dome. It's probably a monument dedicated to the WWI soldiers, but I'm not sure. Anyway, I could not help but taking a photo. I love this place at night.

Cold Attack!

I knew the weather could not stay that mild for long... Now we're going to have to play by the rules of Mr Winter! According to the forecasts, the cold is going to fall over Paris this week with temperatures between minus 1 and minus 6 (on Thursday). Minus 11 is even expected for next Saturday. I think you're going to see some Metro photos pretty soon because I don't think I'l bear riding my scooter with temperatures like that! About this photo: don't get too excited, this is fake snow! I took it in the 5th arrondissement, rue Galande and the church behind the palm tree is Saint Julien Le Pauvre.
