Good old stove
I'm full! I had lunch at Chez Paul, then had a pretty filling snack (galette) at 5 and could not resist a little choux à la crème at 8! Not very reasonable, I know... Anyway, all this because I wanted to show you this beautiful stove (probably wood fueled) that I found precisely at Chez Paul (a restaurant near Bastille, I already mentioned). They don't use it any more, but I've found it's a nice change from today's boring stoves! Have a great Sunday, stay warm - unless you're in Australia or New Zealand, or anywhere in the Southern hemisphere!

Petit déjeuner (Breakfast)
I would not recommend to anyone having breakfast outside at the moment (far too cold!) and though, I promise, I took this photo yesterday at rue Cler! In fact, it's just "advertising" that the Café Central invented to get the people to go inside, of course... In France we mostly eat sweet stuff in for Le petit déjeuner ("small breakfast") that is croissants, pains au chocolat, jam and baguette... and very rarely ham, cheese or sausage like they do in Northern Europe.

Birthday dinner
One good thing about winter is that the seasonal food changes. Last night I was able to share a typical meal from the Franche-Comté region called La Boîte Chaude with some very good friends (including PDP ones): Lynn aka PHX-CDG, Eric (aka Mr PHX!), Roniece, Heather, Jane, Patricia and Michael.
Made by scooping out the middle of Mont d'Or cheese, inserting a few cloves of garlic and some Jura wine from the region, you cook this cheese in it’s “box” for 20 minutes in the oven until it’snice and gooey! Then you eat it with potatoes and charcuterie, not forgetting the saucisse de Morteau. Of course, the meal would not be complete without a desert, which turned out to be... a surprise birthday cake! Now I let you guess who the "chéri" on the cake may be ;-))

Yummy!
Today I discovered what a Makowiec is! It's a traditional Christmas Polish cake that can also be found in the North of France (not surprising since the North of France is a former area of polish immigration) and... in Paris! Hence the one I bought today in a boulangerie. Pretty good actually, even though it's a little dry ;-)

Caught in the act!
So I did have to go out today (to pick up my latest presents I ordered online!) and I could not resist grabbing one of these excellent crèpes that they sell everywhere at the moment. I had a chestnut one stuffed with crème de marron (only in French, I did not see any entry in English spread). Yummy! The woman was really wondering why I would take that many photos during her making the crèpe ;-) Anyway, I thought this would put a smile on your face to see how greedy I am (and why I have to go to the gym every other day LOL!) Have a wonderful Christmas eve tonight everyone, for those of you who celebrate Christmas of course.

The first food truck in Paris

It may not be the best photo you'll find on PDP, but I absolutely wanted to share this slice of Parisian news that I just came across with, by coincidence. This, lady and gentlemen, is a "gourmet" food truck and It may not seem very extraordinary to you, but for us Parisians it is! It's called Le camion qui fume ("the truck that smokes") and it was "invented" by chef Kristin, a Californian girl (what a surprise!) who came to Paris to attend a cooking school (Ferrandi). The interesting part is that she also seems to be an expert at promoting the concept on the Internet (Website, Facebook, Twitter... you name it). I photographed the truck at Place de la Madeleine, but it moves everyday. I wish her all the success she deserves and next time I see the truck, I will surely try the food (see a review on this blog and/or this one).

Among the numerous markets that we have in Paris, the marché d'Aligre - located at rue d'Aligre, of course! - is probably one of the best ones. It's made of a covered area (built in 1779 and still operating nowadays - after a little face lift in 1843!) and an open air open air one, where I took this very Parisian photo. This market is open everyday except Mondays and it's definitely worth a visit if you come to Paris. More on this site - in French.

Escargots
I may be French, I don't remember having ever eaten escargots... And I still haven't, even if I had dinner last night with someone who had some! It was near the Invalides, in a restaurant called Café de l'Esplanade, where they serve them in a very nice way I must say (notice the "mouillettes", these little slices of bread, that you normally dunk into soft boiled eggs, but that can also be useful to absorb the garlic sauce that comes with escargots - and that make them tasty, I'm told...). Bon appétit (pronounced the Julia Childs' way...).

Even at Mc Donald's!
That's it, I finally tested them! What? The Macaroons at Mc Donald's... For yes, ladies and Gentlemen, in France, you can find Macaroons in selected Mc Dos' (as we call them here), the ones that have a Mc Café inside (a little "sweet island", made to compete with Starbucks). Now the big question; are they good? Well they're OK, but not outstanding... they are cheaper though: 4,90 € for 6 pieces.

Where to find a baguette at night?
Not the most glamorous photo posted on PDP? I agree! I even had to cheat a bit with it for the original was really... well... not nice! But the reason why I posted it, is that there is something truly Parisian in it - and truly unique: a baguette vending machine (on the left hand side)! Yes, people, a boulanger (baker) managed to create a baguette dispenser that can operate 24/7 (it's more than a dispenser actually as it completes the cooking when you pay, so that it's crunchy like a fresh one). Think of all the poor Parisians who crave for a baguette at 4am! Now they know where to go: 20 Avenue Mathurin-Moreau in the 19th arrondissement.

Yummy!

It may not be the perfect summer dish, but since it's not really summer at the moment in Paris, well, there are no rules any longer! That is why I did not hesitate to choose this Mille feuilles de Poire au foie gras at the restaurant where I had lunch, at Place du marché Sainte Catherine. Yummy! But not really light... If you want to try this (or almost) on your end, here is what I found for you (in French)!

A real diner in Paris
A-ma-zing! if you're American, if you're in Paris and if you feel a little home sick, I have the perfect place for you! It's called Happy Days diner, and as its name let's you guess, it's a diner! But just not like a French imitation, a real one: with Formica tables, pastel colors, an old jukebox, an old US gas pump... You expect Fonzi to walk in any minute LOL! I know that you don't come to Paris to eat at a diner, but frankly this place is really worth a visit (there are actually 3 in Paris so far, I took this photo at the Hotel de Ville one).

Ham and cheese party
I may have been blogging about Paris for several years now, I'm not the only one! Last evening I attended the anniversary party of Eyepreferparis, the blog that ex New Yorker Richard Nahem has been managing for 5 years now! It took place at O Chateau, a place I already mentioned a long time ago (they do wine testing seminars in English). As for me, I only took photos as I don't drink wine and I'm trying to loose weight!

Picnic Time!
It's D-Day (or rather P-day!) for those of you who happen to be in Paris and want to gather around a little something to eat and drink by the Seine. The weather should be fine, but bring a little sweater with your food and drinks, just in case... This year I really have very little idea of know who is going to show up, which makes it even more fun ;-) And for those of you who are far from Paris, well, what can I say? Wish you were here, I suppose ;-) BTW, this is the Window of Smooth and Co, a new yummy Juice Bar chain!

Paris market
It's Sunday, time to go to the market... There's nothing like Fresh vegetable and fruit, and we are pretty lucky in Paris for there is always a market near a place we live.I already mentioned it, but I'll say in again, in case you come to Paris and are desperate for food(!), there are 82 food markets in Paris (including 3 organic ones) - you can have the whole list, day by day here. Or course, they less fun than this one...

Dinner with PHX-CDG!
Those of you who are long time visitors to PDP all know who PHX-CDG (aka "US Lynn") is... She's had a love story with Paris for some time now, and since her job allows her to come here as often as possible, well she takes full advantage of it! Earlier this week I had the pleasure to have dinner with her at Aux trois petits Cochons (the three little pigs), a very nice little restaurant on rue Tiquetonne in the 2nd arrondissement. I had salmon, as you almost can see ;-) On the way out, I took this photo of her!

Cocktail food
I know a lot of you think I'm a party animal, that I spend my evenings out and that I jump from one gallery opening to another... But I don't! Except yesterday evening where I attended too fabulous events. But shush!, I also have to work and tomorrow is a very early morning as I have to go to Poitiers (a city in the center west of France) for the day. So before I give you some food for thoughts, here is some real food, the one I was offered at one of the places I visited. Sorry that is all I can offer you for today ;-) And before you ask me what this is, well, I simply don't remember (but it was super good!).

Yummy Cheese

I love cheese, but I rarely buy good one because it's very fattening and does not really help lowering you cholesterol!! Last Sunday, however, I fell for one of these on a market and did not regret it a single minute (nor even felt guilty!). They are made of cow milk with a little drop of Armagnac, how could I resist?! There are hundreds different kinds of cheeses in France (some say around 365, one for every day ;-)) and 40 of them even have an Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC), that is can only be made in a specific region of France, like some wine. More on Wikipedia, of course!

Thank you Charlie!
Sorry to bother you again with my social life, but I happened to visit another food ans wine place today, a one called La Muse vin (a play on word too complicated to explain!) to attend the launched of a new Web site. It's called Thank you Charlie (now you understand the title of this post!) and its purpose is to allow you to offer a gift to someone near his/her neighborhood. How? Simply by choosing the gift on the site (anything from a pastry to a massage or a wine course...) and by entering the cell number of the gift recipient. The latter then receives an SMS saying "Someone just offered you a gift, come and pick it up at this address". That's it. Hard to tell if this will be successful, but I thought the idea was pretty cool.

Dinner at "Bon"!
I had dinner at Bon's last evening, one of these restaurants conceived to attract "the rich crowd". They all use the same recipe: nice location (16th arrondissement), nice decor (by Starck, whose else?!), theme cuisine (Asia something), pouting waiters and priceless prices... In the end the experience was not that bad, after all ; the food is really "bon" (bon means good in French) and the atmosphere was a nice change from Mc Donald's! Shame I did not get to see what makes Bon's pride: its library, nor its fireplace nor its wine room. Maybe next time...
