Music!

Let's take a little musical break today... Until the end of May, there is a music show at Le Cabaret Sauvage in Parc de la Villette, called Barbès Café (after Barbès, the area I posted about a few days ago which is known for being the hub of immigrants from North Africa). The show is actually a musical that features North African songs (mostly Algerian) written by artists that started immigrating to France in the 40's. It also seems to have a little political claim, if you look carefully at the posters that I photographed, you'll see two mentions "100% made by immigrants" and "Made in France" ;-). Take a look at the rehearsal here.

The piano player

Hearing music in the street is pretty common in Paris, like in most cities. But it generally comes from bands or guitar players rarely from... (real) piano players! And though, here is what I just photographed at the Cadet Metro station. The interesting part is that it's good marketing ; It works, people were fascinated (there was a big crowd around that you cannot see in the photo) and gave him money. I really wonder how the guy carries his piano around though.

Delightful moment

Great, delightful, fantastic, witty, funny, spectacular, inspiring, subtle, stunning... I don't know enough English words to express what I feel after having seen the Voca people, a group of accapella singers that are really extraordinary. You've probably heard of them already (if you don't visit their website or Youtube), but I did not - and I'm really fortunate to have seen them live on stage at the Bobino theater yesterday. If you come to Paris rush to Bobino before the end of March, or else wait till they come to you.

Tomate Party

Here is my little tribute to my "oldest" follower (well, I guess) for when I saw this poster, I could not help but thinking of Tomate Farcie (stuffed tomato) who is a regular commenter to PDP! In this particular case Tomate has nothing to do with food, nor gardening, but with "music" and dance. If you're interested - and I'm sure you are! - it'll start at 6 am (yes AM!) on Sunday morning at the Plaza Madeleine at 8 place de la Madeleine. Have fun! (Why on earth do I suddenly feel so old?!)

A night at Bollywood

I spent last evening at Bollywood! You know this part of Mumbai dedicated to Indian movies... OK, you're right I'm lying, I stayed in good old Paris. But I still got to spend 2 hours in front of La fabuleuse histoire de Bollywood show at Porte de Versailles, clapping my hands and yelling "Shava" like crazy. These Indian dancers must be on something illegal to have so much energy! Anyway, I had a real blast! Please forgive the poor photo quality that is all I managed to take (I was too scared of being caught!) and I just wanted to share a little bit of my Parisian night time!

Concert at Fontaine Saint Michel

No Paris was not invaded by Aliens overnight, this is just a concert by Hit Machin (no, I did not forget the "e" at the end Machin!) that I photographed in front of the Saint Michel Fountain a few days ago. Don't ask me to judge the music, I did not have the time to stay... You can check their MySpace (and see their video too).

Wagner returns to Paris...

It won't tell you much if you're not an opera fan, but The Ring of the Nibelung 'L'Anneau du Nibelung in French) has returned to Paris after... 53 years! Quite logically it's also the first time it is being shown at the Bastille opera (one of the two major opera houses in Paris), since it was inaugurated in 1989. The Ring is actually composed of fours different dramas inspired by the Scandinavian mythology (I won't bore you with the details, if you're interested, check with Ms Wikipedia!) and it's a real masterpiece. Well, that is if you like Richard Wagner  of course, otherwise you might borrow this famous quote by Woody Allen in Manhattan: "Everytime I hear Wagner I feel like invading Poland"!

Proud to be a celt!

We don't have many Irish people in Paris (about 15 000 according to a few sources that I found on the web), but we have Bretons! Bretons (remember this post?) are the people who leave in the northwest west of France and who originate from the same Celts "tribes" and share more or less the same language (even though, it's not much spoken anymore, at least in France). This year, to celebrate Saint Patrick, they organized a huge Celt gathering where Irish, Bretons, and Asturians (Celts from Northern Spain) will gather, dance and play the bagpipe (check this if you want to hear what it sounds - go directly to minute 4:30!). If you want to join them, it's next Saturday in

Guitar Player in the Metro

I happened to find myself at the Champs Elysées Clémenceau Metro station last evening and I came across a pretty unusual scene. The Paris transport authorities (RATP) had invited 5 musicians (I could only photograph 4 of these musicians, see them on the making of) to perform in the station just before their "real" performance at the Grand Palais (see more here), right outside the metro station. Interesting, and pretty unexpected I must say...

Saint George Tavern

How about a little concert for today? This band was actually playing at the Saint George Tavern, an English pub located next to my home. I did not go inside the place, I just passed by it and heard the music through the window on the way back from Le General Lafayette, a restaurant where I had dinner with Lucio (a regular visitor to PDP who normally lives in Melbourne). A delightful moment. BTW, back to this photo: I took it from the street, which gives it this "backstage" effect. Have a wonderful Weekend, it's going to be cold here (not Minneapolis cold, but Paris cold!)
